The Pocket Guide to Therapy
A 'How to'of the Core Models
Trainees in all mental health professions need basic knowledge of the key therapeutic approaches in counseling & psychotherapy. This is the essential companion, placing specific emphasis on practical application to guide the reader in the 'how to' of conducting each therapeutic model.
Approaches covered include established models such as CBT, psychodynamic psychotherapy, systemic therapy and solution-focused brief therapy, and more recent additions to mainstream therapy like mindfulness and narrative therapy. Each chapter is written by an up-and-coming name in the field, offering a unique insight into the challenges and possibilities of training in each model. The book:
- Includes case examples from a wide range of mental health care settings
- Embedded with worksheets, sample questions and diagrams
- Highlights challenges, strengths and weaknesses of each approach
- Details the background and practical application of therapeutic models
- Discusses evidence-based practice and outcomes
Written in language familiar to first-year trainees and using a range of features to enhance learning, this pocket guide is ideal for those embarking on training across counseling, psychotherapy, psychology, health, nursing, and social work.
I have recommended this as a supplemental reading book for the current NCHP students on stage 2 of the diploma course. It covers some of the course material very well, but other sections are not directly relevant, or outside of the course altogether. The writing style was really nice and clear and it is good at maintaining focus on the practical aspect of doing therapy.
I think this is an excellent introductory text. I'm intending to use it in the context of an addictive behaviour module. I get tired of students talking about counselling in a very unspecific fashion to will be recommending this book so they can tell me what kind of counselling approach they have in mind.
A good introduction to several models of psychotherapy that our students can consider within art psychotherapy practice
A very concise and easy to use book that can be taken as a reference guide as well as a how to do book
This is an excellent book for any student or trainee embarking on counselling studies and practice. It is also a great refresher text for those who might need to re-visit the mainstream theoretical approaches.
