Long-Term Conditions
Challenges in Health & Social Care
- Cathy E Lloyd - The Open University
- Tom Heller - The Open University
The perspectives of each of these groups are voiced within this book, with chapters written by people who use health and social care services, careers, policy-makers and practitioners.
Using a variety of research methods to get to the heart of the matter, the book probes assumptions about the experience of long-term poor health and what constitutes good care. Its aim is to challenge readers to think critically about existing policy and provision and to inspire change based on sound evidence and a drive towards greater multi-professional working.
Long-Term Conditions provides academics, practitioners and students with a thorough grounding in the complex issues surrounding the experience and management of long-term illness. It is an ideal text for courses on policy, management and practice in health and social care.
'It is a pertinent text for courses that prepare practitioners and managers for the optimising care for people with long term conditions and equally importantly for empathising with their predicament.'
Not quite right for the module I teach on but it is definitely a useful text book for other subjects. Some interesting concepts discussed surrounding challenges that practitioners currently face.
The narratives identify the realities and frustrations of living with a long term condition, a true insight into the patients journey. Written in a sensitive and powerful way. The book was engaging and an easy ready whilst raising poignant points.
This book has been written very sensitively through 'snapshot' chapters of various long term conditions. It is interesting and promotes discussion through insightful commentary. I am happy to include it on my reading list in relation to the diabetes and pregnancy chapter, although the whole book is useful. A very poignant chapter written by Sir Terry Pratchett describing dementia through his eyes and experiences which I thoroughly recommend every healthcare professional should read as an example of a patient's journey.
This book provides an understanding of not just long term conditions but how this impacts on the person exploring different aspects of the emotional physical and physiological challenges that may be faced.
This is a clearly written book that is well structured in three sections. I am enjoying reading this book and utilising the information to enhance my lesson plans for teaching 5NH004 module to 2nd year BNurse students.
