Become a DWC Provider

Training to become a qualified provider is available upon request. Qualified providers maintain fidelity to the curriculum and guide clients in successful completion of the program.

Level I or Basic AOD-DWC Education and Level II or Enhanced AOD-DWC Education are considered to be education programs. Providers of these DWC protocols should check to see if they are qualified to deliver AOD education programs to DWI offenders in the county, state, or government jurisdiction in which they provide this service. The authors ask that those who present AOD and DWI education to impaired driving offenders have the following qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree in behavioral sciences or criminal justice
  • Completion of motivational enhancement or interviewing training and/or basic counseling skills
  • Minimum of two years of experience in working with DWI or non-DWI offender populations (e.g. probation or parole officer, case manager counselor, therapist, etc.)
  • Completion of the Basic Driving with Care curriculum delivery training and thorough familiarity with the DWC curriculum.

Level II Therapy is considered to be a treatment program. Those providing Level II DWC Therapy or Treatment must meet the requirements for and be certified or licensed to provide alcohol and other drug (AOD) treatment services in their respective government jurisdiction. The authors ask that DWC providers complete the DWC basic provider delivery training.

Note: It is the responsibility of each training participant to check with the agency regulating the delivery of education and/or treatment services to alcohol and other drug clients and to impaired driving offenders in their respective government or jurisdiction to be sure that they meet the standards and requirements to deliver these services.
