Understanding Social Work Research
- Hugh McLaughlin - Manchester Metropolitan University, UK
Containing case examples, reflective questions and chapter summaries the book takes a student-friendly approach throughout. National and international contexts are reviewed to demonstrate best practice in social work decision making.
The Second Edition considers research in relation to a number of important social work themes, including ethics, anti-oppressive practice, service user research, evidence-based practice and interprofessional work. The book will help readers: critically reflect on their own social work practice; assess, appraise and apply research; effectively advocate on behalf of service-users; confidently engage in debates about the profession; and reflect on legislative and policy developments.
Understanding Social Work Research is a clear and accessible guide to the subject. The book will provide invaluable support to undergraduates, graduates and practitioners working in the field of social work.
A key text to enable undergraduate social workers to develop a systematic approach to social work research
I am looking for a book to closely shadow a module on research for social workers in training so this book may offer more than is required for that purpose. I plan to recommend sections of the book to this group of students. I would like to recommend this book to social work students planning doctoral level research.
very good overview and key concepts well explained
A really useful book for undergraduates. It is clear in its presentation and written in a style easily understandable.
Excellent text for final year social work students and postgraduate practitioners. The use of reflexive questions throughout the book assists the student to frame questions from the chapter concerned. Practice examples are also given which make the research pragmatic.
This book will provide much food for thought for students embarking upon their own research, as well for those casting a critical and reflective eye on existant research. Whilst primarily aimed at social work students it will also be helpful for a wider audience of students studying within the field of social studies.
This text book is very useful for Masters in Social Work students as part of their studies.
It will also be useful reading for Social Work Practice Educators, to support them in engaging with evidence-based practice as part of their role supervising students. It will help to facilitate discussions on making use of social work research when supervising social work students on placement.
This text helps MA Social Work Dissertation students gain an excellent understanding of the breath of social work research and critical issues in doing and utilising research in social work.
Useful text that provides the necessary background issues and debates.
It is a very good book and should help the students to understand about research methods and why research is carried out.
