A wide-ranging book which covers a lot of ground. Case studies and examples from international perspectives were interesting and well selected. The book would be useful across a range of modules, rather than for one specific one.

This is a very accessible and user friendly text for students currently studying on early childhood studies programmes. It not only emphasises and reminds us of the key themes that have shaped early years practice, but it also draws on recent research to help make these essential links between theory and practice. There are also activities throughout the text which are very valuable in extending thinking and enabling reflection of the many issues discussed. These include play, the role of the family within society, and practice and provision within the UK and abroad.
