Multi-agency Working in the Early Years
Challenges and Opportunities

January 2010 | 176 pages | SAGE Publications Ltd

What does working in partnership look like in practice?

Getting multi-agency working right is an exciting but challenging goal in early years care and education; this book suggests ways to draw together the different professional ideas, methods, and targets.

Enhancing the delivery of services to children, parents, and communities is essential if we are to address the detrimental effects of poverty and exclusion. Looking at the Birth to 8 age range, and drawing on interviews with Children's Centre leaders, the book considers:

  • The benefits, and complexities, of multi-agency working
  • What enables, and impedes, good practice
  • Examples of successful multi-agency working
  • Leadership and management in multi-agency settings
  • What the 'new professionals' look like

Suitable for all early years practitioners working in, or organizing, multi-agency practice at any level, this book is also relevant to all those working in children's services and to students of early childhood.

The 'New Professionals'

'We are living through an historic time of change in the delivery of children's and family services in England. At the heart of this change is a cultural and professional shift towards multi-agency working which encourages all professionals to work in partnership and integrate their services around the needs of the child and the family. The challenges of this new way of working are enormous and this timely, informed and extremely accessible book will support all lead professionals in developing the effectiveness of their multi-agency working. It will also challenge their thinking and understanding about how a multi-agency approach might deliver enhanced outcomes for every child and family. This book will be an invaluable support for all those concerned to make multi-agency working work!' - Professor Christine Pascal, Director of the Centre for Research in Early Childhood and President of the European Early Childhood Education Research Association (EECERA)

'Focusing on the birth to eight-years-old age range, the book considers what enables and impedes good practice, and provides a good number of examples of multi-agency working, leadership and management in action' - Early Years Educator

This book was extremely useful for the assignment, promoting positive relationships. It contained the information needed to support the section of the assignment connected with multi agency working. It also enabled students to research areas of multi agency working that they have not experienced within the workplace.

Within this book I particularly liked the chapter on developments within partnership working and the reason for this is because it didn't just focus on England it looked at perspectives from around the world.
The reflective points are also very beneficial within this book as that allows you time to think about practice and put things identifed in the book in to perspective.
