Kathirvel Subramaniam, MD, MPH, FASE University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA, USA

Dr. Subramaniam graduated from Coimbatore Medical College, India in 1992 and was selected to join Anesthesiology residency at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), the premier medical institution in India. Dr. Subramaniam graduated as one of the top graduates in his class in 1996 and continued his training as senior resident at the same institution till 1998. Upon completion, of senior residency, he was appointed as Consultant in Anesthesia at Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh, India, another top tertiary academic medical institution in India.

Dr. Subramaniam’s enthusiasm to learn advanced anesthesia skills stimulated him to pursue residency training in United States. He was selected to join anesthesiology residency at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, one of the Harvard Medical School affiliated residency program. He developed special interest in cardiac anesthesia and perioperative echocardiography during his residency. After graduation in 2004, he decided to undergo further training in the super specialty of cardiac anesthesia and Cleveland Clinic Foundation, the number one cardiac surgery center by US News for more than 10 years offered him cardiac anesthesiology fellowship. Upon completion of his fellowship, he was offered the position of Assistant Professor at the Department of Anesthesiology, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), Pittsburgh.

During his tenure as Assistant Professor at UPMC, he completed Master of Public Health from University of Pittsburgh School of Public Health. As a full time faculty at UPSOM, Dr. Subramaniam practices cardiothoracic and transplant anesthesiology, teaches medical students, residents and fellows and conducts clinical research. He also serves as the Director of Perioperative Echocardiography and Associate Director of Enhanced Recovery Program at UPMC.

Dr. Subramaniam serves as the board member and chair of thoracic transplant committee of Society for Advancement of Transplant Anesthesia. He was awarded Fellow of American Society of Echocardiography (ASE) in 2018 and also serves as Member at Large for Financial committee of ASE. He received several teaching awards and grants, invited to speak on cardiac anesthesia/transplant anesthesia related topics in National and International meetings and published several manuscripts. He also served in the editorial board for Anesthesiology journals and edited several textbooks related to anesthesiology, echocardiography and organ transplantation.
