Joseph Woo, MD Stanford University, Stanford, CA, USA

Y. Joseph Woo, M.D., is a nationally-recognized academic cardiothoracic surgeon who has a robust, high-volume cardiac surgical practice at HUP, performing 400 pump cases per year. He is a gifted, technically-skilled surgeon and heads the Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery Program. He performed the first robotic heart surgery in the Delaware Valley a decade ago, and also performed the world’s first robotic aortic valve procedure. He has significantly advanced the field of complex valve repair and has developed several innovative new mitral valve repair operations. Dr. Woo also heads our Mechanical Circulatory Assist and Cardiac Transplant Program and has likewise developed novel techniques which have been filed for patent protection. He has published these and other innovations in high impact journals. He has been invited to lecture on these topics around the world, and has performed these new operations in several other countries. Dr. Woo also runs an NIH-funded basic science research lab studying stem cells, angiogenesis, and tissue engineering. He is an associate editor for the highest impact factor specialty journal in his field—Circulation. He chairs national grant review study sections for the American Heart Association and the American Association for Thoracic Surgeons. Dr. Woo makes important contributions as a teacher and mentor of students, residents and fellows in the classroom, operating room, bedside and laboratory settings. In this last capacity, he has been able to mentor 8 consecutive postdoctoral fellows in his lab in securing extramural grant funding.
