Jacob Gutsche, MD University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA, USA

Jacob Gutsche earned his medical degree from the University of Miami in 2001. After completing his internship in medicine at Lankenau hospital, he went on to complete his Anesthesia Residency at the University of Pennsylvania Department of Anesthesiology, where he served as the chief resident, the highest honor for graduating residents. Dr. Gutsche then went on to complete his Fellowship training in Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology and Critical Care prior to taking a position as Faculty at the University of Pennsylvania.

At Penn, Jacob has served in many leadership roles including medical director of the Heart and Vascular ICU at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center. Currently, Dr. Gutsche is the Chief of the Division of Cardiac Critical Care at Penn. He is also the co-medical director and a founder of Penn Lung Rescue, a regional ECMO program which features a mobile ECMO team available 24 hours/day. For his service in this mobile ECMO program, Jacob was awarded the Hospital Hero award in 2016. In addition, he is the chair of the Critical Care Committee for Penn Medicine which is standardizing care in the ICU’s across the Penn Health system. Dr. Gutsche has a special interest in cardiovascular critical care quality and ECMO outcomes research.
