Your Social Work Practice Placement
From Start to Finish

December 2013 | 216 pages | SAGE Publications Ltd
Embarking on a first practice placement can be an anxious experience for social work students. This textbook takes them step-by-step through the process, holding their hand through preparation for practice modules and during the course of the placement itself. Focusing on practicalities, knowledge, values and skills, the authors guide students through the challenges they may face.

Chapters include numerous real-life case examples which reflect a range of varying placement contexts including different settings, service-user groups, locations and areas of practice. The book will help students become confident on placement and lead to rich placement experiences which will benefit them throughout the rest of their degree and upon entry to the profession.

Your Social Work Practice Placements is essential reading for all social care students.

In the ever changing world of social work, students need a firm footing from which to launch themselves into placement. This book offers that foundation. It provides a great balance between informative guidance and theoretical perspectives that will undoubtedly benefit any student preparing to enter the placement world.

I have used this extensively with level 4 students embarking on their first placement and to support the planning tools I have given them in class.

This is a book which embeds theory into practice. It provides practical and analytical approaches to professional knowledge in a way that models a thoughtful, balanced and well- defended understanding of professional development. The book also links the HCPC and TCSW standards into examples of practice.

What a brilliant book - throughout it reinforces to students' the key building blocks for learning and development in their practice placements: knowledge, skills and values. It must surely be the case that if students' work on the exercises that are relevant to their situation in placement and follow the 'top tips' they will not meet their level of PCF with flying colours but will be an asset to their placement agencies and programme.

I have placed this on the reading list for personal and professional development across the three years of the BSc (Hons) in Social Work Programme. All students should read this as it is very informative and helpful in terms of their practice learning. I have also placed it on the reading list for my Enabling Practice Learning Post Qualifying course.

This provides good practical advice for students on placement and addresses many of the anxieties that students commonly have. It also helps students to make connections between their academic knowledge and the placement setting.
