Seminars in Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia

eISSN: 19405596 | ISSN: 10892532 | Current volume: 29 | Current issue: 4 Frequency: Quarterly
Seminars in Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia is a quarterly journal that serves the educational needs of clinicians practicing cardiothoracic and vascular anesthesia, thoracic and abdominal transplant anesthesia, pediatric/congenital cardiothoracic anesthesia, and related specialties including critical care medicine. SCVA provides the anesthesia practitioner with access to timely reviews that summarize the data and expert opinion supporting evidence-based medicine and current best practices. It fulfills an important niche as one of only two journals devoted to the anesthetic and perioperative care of patients with heart, lung, vascular, and pediatric/congenital heart disease as well as patients requiring thoracic or abdominal organ transplantation. The Journal adheres to a rigorous double-anonymized reviewing policy in which the identity of both the reviewer and author are always concealed from both parties.

This journal is a member of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE)

Seminars in Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia is a quarterly, peer-reviewed publication devoted to the dissemination of educational material involving the cardiovascular and pulmonary systems relevant to the perioperative care of the surgical patient. As of 2017, SCVA expands its scope to transplant anesthesia and critical care, aiming to become a comprehensive academic forum for all physicians involved in thoracic and abdominal organ transplantations.

Presentations feature a multidisciplinary approach with contributions from anesthesiologists, surgeons, internists, specialists in critical care medicine, and other health care practitioners interested in perioperative medicine. Clinical education material centers around topic-based Review Articles, Original Research, Technology Communications, along with case reports and Clinical Challenges which are clinical case based didactic articles. SCVA strives to present internationally relevant subject material and innovative scientific submissions from all continents.

In addition to these efforts to engage scholarship globally, Seminars in Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia is committed to promoting diversity, equity and inclusion in our publications. We encourage submissions from a broad range of international authors with a wide variety of backgrounds. Furthermore, we have recruited a diverse group of Editorial Board members to maintain an inclusive community within the journal’s leadership.

  • Seminars in Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia: The Journal of Perioperative Medicine (SCVA) will consider for publication suitable articles on all topics related to anesthesia for cardiac, vascular, and thoracic surgery. The scope of SCVA is broad and seeks to consolidate all material pertinent to cardiothoracic anesthesiology, including topics from critical care medicine, pharmacology, monitoring, perfusion technology, internal medicine, and surgery.

This blinded peer-reviewed journal is a member of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).

    Editorial Office
All article queries regarding SCVA should be directed to the editorial office, Editor-in-Chief Nathaen Weitzel at the University of Colorado, Denver nathaen.weitzel@ucdenver.edu, Editor-in-Chief Miklos Kertai at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nasvhille miklos.kertai@vanderbilt.edu, or Managing Editor Amanda Bockman Amanda.Bockman@sagepub.com.

    Editorial Policies
Manuscripts are accepted for consideration on the condition that they are contributed solely to SCVA. No substantial part of a paper may have been published elsewhere, except for a scientific abstract. Online publications of lecture syllabus materials constitute a publication, and should be cited appropriately in the text.  Manuscripts will be reviewed by the editor, associate editors, members of the editorial board, and appropriate independent referees. If the article is accepted for publication, editorial revisions may be made to aid clarity and understanding without altering the meaning.

Articles, editorials, letters to the editor, and other text material in SCVA represent the opinion of the authors and do not necessarily represent the opinion of the editor, editorial board, or publisher. The editors and publisher deny any responsibility or liability for statements and opinions expressed by the authors. Neither the editor nor the publisher guarantees, warrants, or endorses any product or service advertised in this publication, nor do they guarantee any claim made by the manufacturer of such product or service.

Submission of a manuscript to the Journal is taken as evidence that no portion of the text or figures has been copyrighted, published, or submitted for publication elsewhere, unless information regarding previous publication is cited and permission obtained. A copy of permission obtained must accompany the manuscript. Transfer of copyright to Sage Publications is a condition of publication.

Manuscripts submitted to SCVA must be blinded prior to submission or they will be returned to the author prior to review.

    Manuscript Submission
Manuscripts must be submitted electronically at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/scva, where authors will be required to set up an online account in the SAGETRACK system powered by ScholarOne. All manuscripts should be formatted with double spacing and 12 point font.  Average time from submission to first decision: 35 days.

    Review Articles
Review Articles should be written for a targeted length of 4000-6000 words, and can include a wide range of references (typically 30-80). These articles are either by invitation, or open to free submission. Please contact the Editor, Nathaen Weitzel, if you are interested in writing a review and provide a proposed topic and timeline for submission. Please look through the existing review database on the SCVA website for previous topic coverage to avoid repeating any recently reviewed items. Tables, Figures, and clinical imaging are encouraged as part of these manuscripts.

    Clinical Challenges submissions
Clinical Challenges are a report that describes a clinically challenging case, but focuses on the clinical decision making process in an educational / didactic format. Roughly ¼ to 1/3 of the article can be devoted to the case description, with the majority of the manuscript focused on key didactic points relevant to the case. The word count for these reports should be 1500 – 3000 words. This type of manuscript should include relevant clinical imaging. This manuscript can include echocardiography rounds if it meets the above criteria, and should include 2-3 movie clips of the imaging findings as well as associated still image clips. Please use MP4, MOV, or WMV files and preview the clips to make sure they are visible on both Windows and Macintosh platforms. Still images should be in high resolution JPEG or TIFF files. Please format the movies in at least 480 x 360 pixels or 640 x 480. Limit clips to 20 seconds.

    Abstract
The abstract should be no longer than 150 words in length. The abstract should summarize the main points of the paper and be descriptive, narrative, and informative. At the bottom of the abstract, please also submit 3-5 keywords for your article.

    Tables
All tables must be cited in text. Tables are to be numbered with Arabic numerals (Table 1, Table 2) in order of their text citation. Each table should be typed (double-spaced throughout) on a separate sheet of paper and should have a title. Word table format is preferred. Each table should have a legend in sufficient detail to allow understanding without reference to the text.

    Figure and Artwork Submission
Artwork includes charts and graphs, maps, photographs, line art, and tables with 17 or more columns.  Please include high resolution images of 300 dpi.

Figures will appear in color in the online issue at no charge. Color figures for the print issue are charged to the author at the rate of $800 for the first figure and $200 for each subsequent figure. Payment must be received before the article can appear in print; the author should note his or her desire to have figures appear in color in the print issue when he or she submits his or her articleElectronic Art.

Acceptable file formats include the following: TIFF, EPS, JPEG, and PDF. Microsoft application files are acceptable for vector art (line art).

    References
References should be cited according to the AMA Manual of Style. In the text, please use a superscripted number that correlates with the reference at the end of the manuscript. When several references are cited simultaneously in the text, you can list the superscripted numbers together, for example, “Many researchers have debated this subject.”1,2,5,9. Use “et al” for cites of 3 authors or more in text. However, in the references, list up to 6 authors. If there are more than 6 authors, list the first 3 authors and then “et al.” Type references double-spaced at the end of the manuscript numbered in order of appearance in the manuscript. ETHICAL POLICIES

    Authorship
Papers should only be submitted for consideration once consent is given by all contributing authors. Those submitting papers should carefully check that all those whose work contributed to the paper are acknowledged as contributing authors.

The list of authors should include all those who can legitimately claim authorship. This is all those who:

    (i) made a substantial contribution to the concept and design, acquisition of data or analysis and interpretation of data,

(ii) drafted the article or revised it critically for important intellectual content,

(iii) approved the version to be published.

(iv) agreement to be accountable for all aspects of the work in ensuring that questions related to the accuracy or integrity of any part of the work are appropriately investigated and resolved.

Please refer to the ICMJE Authorship guidelines at http://www.icmje.org/recommendations/browse/roles-and-responsibilities/defining-the-role-of-authors-and-contributors.html

    Acknowledgements
Any acknowledgements should appear first at the end of your article prior to your Declaration of Conflicting Interests (if applicable), any notes and your References.

All contributors who do not meet the criteria for authorship should be listed in an ‘Acknowledgements’ section. Examples of those who might be acknowledged include a person who provided purely technical help, writing assistance, or a department chair who provided only general support. Authors should disclose whether they had any writing assistance and identify the entity that paid for this assistance.

    Funding
To comply with the guidance for Research Funders, Authors and Publishers issued by the Research Information Network (RIN), SCVA additionally requires all Authors to acknowledge their funding in a consistent fashion under a separate heading. Please visit Funding Acknowledgements on the SAGE Journal Author Gateway to confirm the format of the acknowledgment text in the event of funding or state in your acknowledgments that: This research received no specific grant from any funding agency in the public, commercial, or not-for-profit sectors.

    Declaration of conflicting interests
It is the policy of SCVA to require a declaration of conflicting interests from all authors enabling a statement to be carried within the paginated pages of all published articles.

Please include any declaration at the end of your manuscript after any acknowledgements and prior to the references, under a heading ‘Conflict of interests’. If no declaration is made the following will be printed under this heading in your article: ‘None declared’. Alternatively, you may wish to state that ‘The Author(s) declare(s) that there is no conflict of interest’.

When making a declaration the disclosure information must be specific and include any financial relationship that all authors of the article has with any sponsoring organization and the for-profit interests the organization represents, and with any for-profit product discussed or implied in the text of the article.

Any commercial or financial involvements that might represent an appearance of a conflict of interest need to be additionally disclosed in the covering letter accompanying your article to assist the Editor in evaluating whether sufficient disclosure has been made within the Declaration of Conflicting Interests provided in the article.

For more information please visit the SAGE Journal Author Gateway.

    Research ethics
All papers reporting animal and human studies must include whether written consent was obtained from the local Ethics Committee or Institutional Review Board. Please ensure that you have provided the full name and institution of the review committee and an Ethics Committee reference number.

We accept manuscripts that report human and/or animal studies for publication only if it is made clear that investigations were carried out to a high ethical standard. Studies in humans which might be interpreted as experimental (e.g. controlled trials) should conform to the Declaration of Helsinkihttp://www.wma.net/en/30publications/10policies/b3/index.html and typescripts must include a statement that the research protocol was approved by the appropriate ethical committee. In line with the Declaration of Helsinki 1975, revised Hong Kong 1989, we encourage authors to register their clinical trials (at http://clinicaltrials.gov or other suitable databases identified by the ICMJE, http://www.icmje.org/publishing_10register.html). If your trial has been registered, please state this on the Title Page. When reporting experiments on animals, indicate on the Title Page which guideline/law on the care and use of laboratory animals was followed.

    Patient consent
Authors are required to ensure the following guidelines are followed, as recommended by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors, Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals. Patients have a right to privacy that should not be infringed without informed consent. Identifying information, including patients' names, initials, or hospital numbers, should not be published in written descriptions, photographs, and pedigrees unless the information is essential for scientific purposes and the patient (or parent or guardian) gives written informed consent for publication. Informed consent for this purpose requires that a patient who is identifiable be shown the manuscript to be published.

Identifying details should be omitted if they are not essential. Complete anonymity is difficult to achieve, however, and informed consent should be obtained if there is any doubt. For example, masking the eye region in photographs of patients is inadequate protection of anonymity. If identifying characteristics are altered to protect anonymity, such as in genetic pedigrees, authors should provide assurance that alterations do not distort scientific meaning and editors should so note. When informed consent has been obtained it should be indicated in the submitted article.

    Reviewers
As part of the submission process you will be asked to provide the names of peers who could be called upon to review your manuscript. Recommended reviewers should be experts in their fields and should be able to provide an objective assessment of the manuscript. Please be aware of any conflicts of interest when recommending reviewers. Examples of conflicts of interest include (but are not limited to) the below:

    • The reviewer should have no prior knowledge of your submission
    • The reviewer should not have recently collaborated with any of the authors
    • Reviewer nominees from the same institution as any of the authors are not permitted

Please note that the Editors are not obliged to invite any recommended/opposed reviewers to assess your manuscript.

    Contributor’s publishing agreement
Before publication, SAGE requires the author as the rights holder to sign a Journal Contributor’s Publishing Agreement. SAGE’s Journal Contributor’s Publishing Agreement is an exclusive license agreement which means that the author retains copyright in the work but grants SAGE the sole and exclusive right and license to publish for the full legal term of copyright. Exceptions may exist where an assignment of copyright is required or preferred by a proprietor other than SAGE. In this case copyright in the work will be assigned from the author to the society. For more information please visit our Frequently Asked Questions on the SAGE Journal Author Gateway.

SCVA and SAGE take issues of copyright infringement, plagiarism or other breaches of best practice in publication very seriously. We seek to protect the rights of our authors and we always investigate claims of plagiarism or misuse of articles published in the journal. Equally, we seek to protect the reputation of the journal against malpractice. Submitted articles may be checked using duplication-checking software. Where an article is found to have plagiarized other work or included third-party copyright material without permission or with insufficient acknowledgement, or where authorship of the article is contested, we reserve the right to take action including, but not limited to: publishing an erratum or corrigendum (correction); retracting the article (removing it from the journal); taking up the matter with the head of department or dean of the author’s institution and/or relevant academic bodies or societies; banning the author from publication in the journal or all SAGE journals, or appropriate legal action.

    Open access and author archiving
SCVA offers optional open access publishing via the SAGE Choice program. For more information please visit the SAGE Choice website. For information on funding body compliance, and depositing your article in repositories, please visit SAGE Publishing Policies on our Journal Author Gateway.
