Managing Behaviour in Further and Adult Education

Third Edition

December 2013 | 132 pages | Learning Matters
This practical guide to managing behaviour in Further and Adult Education is for all those training to teach in the sector. The third edition includes new chapters on 14-19 learners and behaviour theory and continues to offer practical ideas on how to manage and motivate students. It takes account of the variety of contexts in the sector and makes reference to important research findings and studies of learner behaviour. Based firmly on what teachers and students have to say about their experiences, it uses case studies, dialogue and journal extracts to explore key issues, and help teachers develop their practice.

This looks great. I will make it a recommended text for the 'Understanding and managing challenging behaviour' module.

Previous editions have proved very beneficial to learners. This new edition is fully updated for the sector and will be recommended to all my learners. I will also add it to the reading list on my website in the 'behaviour and motivation' section: http://www.anngravells.co.uk/ctllsreadinglist.html

Very timely publication as Adult Education now delivers to an increasing number of younger learners or those mandated to attend by outside agencies. It contains clearly laid out chapters giving advice and practical suggestions for dealing with a range of issues. Beneficial to new and experienced teachers alike.

I loved this book. The case studies have a ring of authenticity, the book structure and layout is clear and logical and the writing is accessible without being over simplified. The author starts from the real life experience of new teachers and interweaves these narratives with psychological learning theory and explanations of the social and economic situations our learners find themselves in. As a teacher educator I will use some of the case studies in my class sessions. I will also recommend that all my trainee teachers consider buying this book - especially those trainees working with mandated learners. I read this book in one sitting, it was entertaining, it made me reflect on my own teaching and I could see at once that it was current and relevant. My only criticism is - why is the title and the cover page so uninspiring ? I nearly passed the book by without a second look..
