Collecting and Interpreting Qualitative Materials

Fourth Edition
Edited by:

October 2012 | 656 pages | SAGE Publications, Inc
Collecting and Interpreting Qualitative Materials, Fourth Edition is Volume III of the three-volume paperback versions of The SAGE Handbook of Qualitative Research, Fourth Edition. This portion of the handbook considers the tasks of collecting, analyzing, and interpreting empirical materials, and comprises the complete handbook's "Part IV: Methods of Collecting and Analyzing Empirical Materials" and "Part V: The Art and Practices of Interpretation, Evaluation, and Presentation."

Collecting and Interpreting Qualitative Materials, Fourth Edition introduces the researcher to basic methods of gathering, analyzing and interpreting qualitative empirical materials. Part 1 moves from narrative inquiry, to critical arts-based inquiry, to oral history, observations, visual methodologies, and autoethnographic methods. It then takes up analysis methods, including computer-assisted methodologies, focus groups, as well as strategies for analyzing talk and text. The chapters in Part II discuss evidence, interpretive adequacy, forms of representation, post-qualitative inquiry, the new information technologies and research, the politics of evidence, writing, and evaluation practices.

Norman K. Denzin and Yvonna S. Lincoln

This is an exceptional text, which provides a grounding in a wide variety of methodologies that support students to draw upon contextual examples when establishing their own rationales for selecting and developing their research methodologies. The examples for how to engage with 'data' once gathered also presents a powerful and inspiring array of examples to inspire and inform students.

Part of the new triple edition Handbook of Research Methods, for which these authors are famous. This volume gives a tremendously detailed overview of the tricky areas of qualitative data collection and interpretation. I cannot fault this book for breadth or depth.

A very insightful overview of data analysis for qualitative inquiry. I believe a great text book for those who just started their project as it guides new researches to consider various possibilities in unraveling their data in the future.

I chose this book as a more specialised text for Foundation Degree students; however close inspection reveals that it is a content heavy book more suitable for postgraduate students. Thus, I will recommend particular chapters for another course I manage on research methods for those wishing to delve deeper into under-used qualitative methodologies. There are real high points in this text, the introduction is a superb overview of the current challenges facing qualitative researchers. Other chapters in part one meriting mention are those on narrative enquiry, and analyzing talk and text. Part two is a highly useful section, with fulsome debates on the practicalities for researchers regarding interpretation, evaluation and presentation of qualitative materials. My only critique is that some chapters adopt a conversational albeit narrative style, and this detracts a little from the scholarly levity. All in all a comprehensive, detailed, and interesting exploration of a subject under a perennial spotlight.

An excellent book and a must read for serious researchers. I would suggest that it is more suitable for Master’s level students.

Can be used in isolation or as part of the set of 3 texts. Would recommend to undergraduate and post graduate students.

Although this book has in-depth information on qualitative research methods, it would be more suitable for postgraduate students. However, I would recommend sections of this for some of my more academic dissertation students. I would also recommend this to our postgraduate research students.

Denzin & Lincoln, highly celebrated authors in the field of qualitative research, make this book essential for students at MA level who wish to consider these methods.

a detailed and practical and text with the authority of Denzin and Lincoln as editors and contributors.. I'd suggest that it is more for masters level study rather than undergraduate
