Exercise 8.1 Preparing to Write Your Personal Statement on Teaching and Learning

Based on your years as a student or teacher, what are your beliefs about good and bad teaching and learning? Most people have some opinions about what is right or wrong about the education system.

Consider the following:

  1. What exactly is the purpose of education?
  2. What is the role of students?
  3. What preparation do you think students need in light of an increasingly diverse country and a global workplace?
  4. What are your preferred instructional approaches?
  5. What should be key components of the curriculum?
  6. What is the role of assessment?

After you’ve written your personal statement about teaching and learning, write a brief statement about how your beliefs informed the kind of teacher you are or want to be and the kind of teacher you need to be.

Note to Instructors:
This exercise can be completed individually or as a group, and for group discussion in-person or online.
