Richard M. Wardrop III, MD, PhD, FAAP, FACP University of North Carolina School of Medicine, USA
Dr. Wardrop received his PhD in Molecular Virology and Immunology in 2000 and then his medical degree in 2002, from Ohio State University. He then completed his Residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics (‘06) and Chief Residency (‘07) in Internal Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After academic positions and affiliations with The University of Virginia School of Medicine, Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine, Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine (founding faculty), and Campbell University School of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. Wardrop returned to join the faculty of University of North Carolina (UNC) School of Medicine in 2013. Dr. Wardrop has practiced both inpatient and outpatient general internal medicine and pediatrics, and although he avoids “labels” he most closely self-identifies himself as a “Hospitalist”.
Dr. Wardrop enjoys professional development of all kinds including participating in and devising programs for faculty, other providers, and trainees at all levels. He served as Program Director for the Combined Internal Medicine and Pediatrics Residency at UNC (2013-2017), with the program achieving #1 national ranking under his leadership in 2017 (Doximity Residency Navigator). Dr. Wardrop currently teaches in all 4 years of the medical school curriculum at UNC on topics ranging from Immunology in the basic sciences to Population Health for more senior students, in addition to his regular clinical instruction at the bedside. His specific interests lie in promoting and providing High Value Care education, provider wellness, peer-coaching, and development of skills for clinician-educators. Dr. Wardrop serves as the Past-President of the UNC Academy of Educators, and has been director of the UNC AOE Residents as Teachers Program since 2015, in addition to other contributions including establishing new faculty orientation and leadership development programs.
Within the greater medical community, Dr. Wardrop’s extensive leadership roles include serving the American College of Physicians (ACP) as a Wellness Champion, ambassador and representative to the ACP’s Wellness Initiatives, and active membership on the ACP Provider Wellness Task Force. He also serves on the national ACP Council of Early Career Physicians, and Chair of the NC ACP Chapter’s Wellness Committee. Dr. Wardrop was recently selected as Chair-elect of the ACP Chair of the Council of Early Career Physicians and to serve on the ACP Board of Regents. Additionally, he was elected Governor-elect of the NC ACP in 2017, a role he will forgo to joining the faculty at UMC. Within the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine (AAIM), Dr. Wardrop serves on the AAIM Education Committee, chaired the AAIM Faculty Development Committee (2015-2017), and served on the AAIM GME Funding Task Force. Within the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), Dr. Wardrop has been a member of Section of Medicine and Pediatrics Executive Council since 2015 and was a section-editor / editor for AAP Grand Rounds for 3 years. He also serves on the Advisory Board for the development of Materials to Increase Minority Involvement in Clinical Trials (MIMICT) sponsored by the American College of Rheumatology.
