Tetsuro Sakai, MD, PhD is Director of Scholarly Development, Department of Anesthesiology, Professor of Anesthesiology & the Clinical and Translational Science Institute, Faculty Member, McGowan Institute of Regenerative Medicine, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Upon completion of his anesthesiology residency, Dr. Sakai joined the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine (UPSoM) in 2005. Dr. Sakai was promoted to Associate Professor of Anesthesiology at UPSoM in 2010, and to Professor of Anesthesiology in 2014. In the field of clinical organ transplantation, Dr. Sakai has conducted numerous clinical studies. Dr. Sakai described a comprehensive veno-venous bypass method and management technique during liver transplantation (Sakai, et al. Clinical Transplantation, 2010); summarized the incidence, outcome, and risk factors of intraoperative pulmonary thromboembolism during liver transplantation (Sakai, et al. British Journal of Anaesthesia, 2012) and cardiac arrest (Matsusaki, et al. Liver Transplantation, 2013); and demonstrated the safety of invasive monitoring used during liver transplantation (Lu, et al. Liver Transplantation, 2014). These works attracted significant attention at the International Liver Transplantation Society’s annual meetings; his abstracts were selected for prestigious podium presentations in 2006, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2014, and 2015. He was an invited lecturer of the International Liver Transplantation Society’s annual meetings in 2015 and 2016. Dr. Sakai has been invited to serve as an ad hoc reviewer for multiple leading peer reviewed journals in this field, including American Journal of Transplantation and Liver Transplantation, among others.
