Constructing Grounded Theory
- Kathy Charmaz - Sonoma State University
Grounded Theory
This expanded second edition:
- explores how to effectively focus on data collection
- demonstrates how to use data for theorizing
- adds two new chapters that guide you through conducting and analysing interviews in grounded theory
- adds a new chapter on symbolic interactionism and grounded theory
- considers recent epistemological debates about the place of prior theory
- discusses the legacy of Anselm Strauss for grounded theory.
This is a seminal title for anyone serious about understanding and doing grounded theory research.
An important guide to a key methodological approach frequently used by the New and Early Career Researchers I work with.
This is an excellent book for students embarking on using grounded theory in their research projects. Charmaz explains the how to and the why in a way that conveys GT as a justifiable way of generating insights that are grounded in participant data.
One of the best texts on GT. Much improved over earlier edition. I and students love this text and author!
I’ve used this book while discussing topic on grounded theory. This book is very valuable seeking to explain students history of grounded theory and social construction ideas in research strategy (in this case – social construction approach to grounded theory). This book provides very helpful tips and recommendations, examples from real researches - on technique of interview (samples of questions, interviews‘ excerpts, examples of coding procedures), memo-writing, sampling, etc. An user (a reader) can find these valuable examples in visually distinguished boxes. The book gives an exhaustive description of the role of theory in grounded theory and gives advises how write theoretical framework). I will use this book next semester and will recommend students to use that. Additionally, I found this book very helpful in the process of supervising students in their work on master thesis. This textbook is a splendid practical tool for research.
Constructing Grounded Theory is an excellent guide to qualitative data collection and analysis and is a suitable text for post graduate students involved in conducting research for Masters or Doctoral studies. The book is clearly structured and offers a number of well constructed examples for both interviewing and analysis. I recommend this book as essential reading for students who are attempting qualitative research for the first time and as supportive reading for more experienced researchers.
This is an excellent guide for students researching using grounded theory and will be a welcome companion for those who adopt this methodology
A useful and accessible introduction to Grounded Theory for students on taught MA and research degree programmes.
A must-have resource for novices of grounded theory as a research theoretical framework and qualitative data analytical technique
It is a great book to understand all the method of grounded theory. It also has an expressive explanation of applying the process of codifying, analysing and write a qualitative research with GT method.
This expanded edition of a well-established text includes additional material on interviewing in general (perhaps not essential) and more useful material on interviewing in relation to grounded theory. There is a valuable additional theoretical chapter on symbolic interactionism which will appeal to some readers who enjoy a more reflective chapter amidst the more practical ones. The practical material remains valuable as ever.
