Mareile Kaufmann University of Oslo, Norway

Kaufmann’s background is in Criminology, Sociology and Cultural Studies and she is an associate professor at the Department of Criminology and Sociology of Law, University of Oslo. With her work she seeks to consolidate the field of Digital Criminology. In particular, she studies digital surveillance practices and how people engage critically with these practices from within surveillance systems. She works with qualitative research designs that combine theory with innovative angles and strong empirical components. This combination also shows itself in the range of groups she was allowed to conduct research with, including intelligence officers, state officials, software developers and algorithm designers, as well as social media users who were exposed to terror attacks, hackers, artists and kids. Since 2021 she leads the ERC-funded project Digital DNA as well as the project Bodies of Evidence, which is funded by the Norwegian Research Council.
