- Alison Wakefield - University of Portsmouth, UK
- Jenny Fleming - University of Tasmania, Australia
The dictionary delivers a complete guide to policing in a comprehensive, easy-to-use format. The world's leading academics and practitioners contribute to over 130 substantive entries, which map out all the key concepts and topics in the field internationally.
Each entry includes
- A concise definition
- Description of distinctive features
- Critical evaluation (for major conceptual entries)
- Cross-referencing with related terms, to enable readers to formulate a comprehensive understanding of the field
- Key readings, to assist students in taking their knowledge further
This is a must-have for students, lecturers, researchers, and professionals in police studies, criminology, and criminal justice. It is the ideal companion to The SAGE Dictionary of Criminology—together the two books provide the most authoritative and comprehensive guide available.
'This accessible reference work is much more than a dictionary; in addition to a traditional definition, each entry provides an overview of relevant research on the topic, often engaging in a short, lively debate about the topic's significance to policing and broader criminal justice issues. The SAGE Dictionary of Policing deserves a place on the bookshelves of scholars around the world.'

'This dictionary covers a great many of the key concepts and issues in modern policing. Its value is both in the quality of the contributors and the way in which each section not only gives clear and accessible explanations but also gives an overview of the evaluation available. It is a very welcome resource for those who not only want a reference book but also some guidance on evidence-based practice.'

A useful companion to those embarking on a policing course.
This is a great resource for introducing undergraduate students to key concepts in policing
Brilliant resource, a must-have for students and lecturers alike. Each entry has a concise definition, associated concept and suggest further readings.
Excellent supporting text which supports and enables student learning
A gem of a book. An excellent reference point for students interested in the study of Policing.
The book provides a very good overview of all of the issues related to policing. There are however other books out there which provide a more in-depth analysis of the same topic areas also in one book.
At the same time this is a very good supplemental text which can serve as a springboard to other more in-depth analysis of the subject discussed.
This 'dictionary' (it is far more) not only provides clear and concise definitions of many of the major concepts and issues in modern-day policing, it also provides distinctive features, evaluations and key texts of each topic. This reference book is easy to read and provides an excellent starting point for research on policing and I would recommend that students invest in a copy.
