200 Science Investigations for Young Students
Practical Activities for Science 5 - 11

March 2001 | 288 pages | SAGE Publications Ltd

This book enables teachers to develop a complete range of basic investigations for science with students aged five to 11 years. It demonstrates how children can use hands-on activities to consolidate and extend their knowledge and understanding.

Investigations are presented in a generic form, so that teachers can work through them and adapt them to meet the particular needs of their own classes. The presentation of activities ranges from highly-structured sequences of instructions and questions (with answers !), to more general discussions, depending on the approach needed and the likely variations in equipment and materials available. Each activity is aimed to help any teacher carry out significant scientific investigations with their class, and where necessary, to learn alongside them.

This book is good for ideas. it helps with some of the general science lessons rather than those directly in my field.
But that does not stop it being a resource I would like to have on hand.

Extremely useful investigations and practicals that are accessible to trainee teachers. The theory is easy to understand and therefore students that may struggle with the scientific knowledge required to teach up to Level 6 would find this book particularly useful.

Good selection of investigations but feels dated with dense text and few diagrams. Many activities require an unrealistic level of practical construction by the teacher.

This is a supportive book, as to aid teachers with the development of young children in practical science activities. The activities and investigations are presented well, which enables adaptations of the material where possible, thus tailoring to the needs of the group.

I shared this book with students who are keen to get their own copy now. They liked the many ideas and activities that they can use in the classroom. The section on the role of investigation was helpful in developing understanding of this critical element of science.
