Learning in Early Childhood
A Whole Child Approach from birth to 8
- Pat Beckley - Bishop Grosseteste University College
By explaining the theoretical context and highlighting relevant research evidence, this book supports a whole child approach to learning in the early years. Drawing on case studies from a wide range of early years settings, the chapters consider how the different professions in education, health and social care can work together to achieve the best possible outcomes for all young children.
Included are chapters on:
- Theories of learning
- Partnerships with parents and care givers
- Motivation and self-esteem
- Diversity
- Inclusion
- Thinking skills
- Approaches to play
- Engaging early learners
- Leadership and management in early years settings
- Multi-agency working
The links made between theory and practice, and the practical suggestions for how to make this happen in any early years setting, make this book a vital text for all early years students.
Use this book all the time and recommend it to my students
would be useful for some parts of the International ,module to compare and contrast European standards to our own
Lovely book interesting read
This book links to theory and practice, draws on case studies and offers questions for discussion. It lists some useful websites for students to research further. It considers the work of professionals in social care and health as well as education. The organisation into 4 parts makes it easy for students to navigate and dip in and out of.
This gives trainee teachers valuable insight into the learning of the "whole child" as the title suggests. It sets out key aspects of child development and draws on relevant research evidence. The role of members of multi-professional teams is also a strength of the book. It includes effective case studies and recommendations for further reading.
This book applies to the whole child approach, including theoretical aspects as well as current research. Furthermore the author offers firsthand experiences from different early years settings. We all need to work together to reach the best possible start for the children today. This book offers key information to reach those objectives.
This is a really good and comprehensive text book for Early Years, covering all relevant areas for our BA (Hons) in Early Childhood Studies and Care. I have ordered via University of Bournemouth copies for the library to stock for students.
The only areas for improvement would be the referencing in the book, because it is not always current, considering it's a 2012 edition, it should reference the DCSF 2008 version of the EYFS, and not DfES 2007!
Also the questions for discussions are a bit basic and could cover and encourage 'further reading and ressearch' such as journals!
