The integration of contemporary issues and educational change contextualises how social, political and economic factors contribute to education agendas. The succinct issues provide opportunities for students to consider questions and use these to initiate and shape discussions.

This is a very comprehensive guide to education studies. The text book is up to date, with a broad spectrum and covers many contemporary issues in education. I will be recommending it to my education students.

This publication has been well edited to bring together a range of very current topics that are all applicable to learners studying an educational based academic programme. It successfully contains enough detail about all of the key conceptual areas of compulsory education (Key stages 1-5) without leaving you floundering. The chapters focus on the core salient requirements with the 'research boxes' allowing you to be guided on further depth of study should you wish.

I thought the two sections on 'alternatives to main stream education' and 'devolved education? Policy in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland' also helped with general knowledge and to a certain extent employability, but other than some implied paragraphs spaced around various chapters, was a section that I feel could have been added to increase the value of this publication to the learners as the vast majority of Higher Education academic courses in education studies have this now as a core element.
That said we will be adding this book to our initial recommended reading list for the first year undergraduates.

This book covers a range of current educational issues, while providing some background information, which allows students to gain an insight to policies and practice.
The ‘Pause for thought’ sections are an excellent feature, which will encourage students to critically reflect on information. It also provides questions that can be discussed in groups to develop students’ reflective skills, while also gaining and considering alternative points of view.
