Child Development for Teachers

December 2019 | 152 pages | Learning Matters
An understanding of child development is an essential part of teaching.

This new text supports trainee teachers and Newly Qualified Teachers (NQTs) to understand how children develop and how their development impacts on their learning.
Importantly, the text is written specifically for teachers and focuses on what they need to know to be effective in the classroom.  The text not only supports them to better understand children individually but also supports them to appreciate the needs of all children across the school

Each chapter includes:
- a focus on a theory of child development to support understanding.
- case studies and critical questions to explore the learning and help the reader to develop critical thinking skills.
- practical strategies for supporting children in the classroom which focus on how teachers can use an understanding of child development to enhance their practice.

Chapter 1 Why teachers need to know about child development

Chapter 2 Children’s cognitive development

Chapter 3 Social development and its impact on learning

Chapter 4 Emotional development and wellbeing

Chapter 5 How development shapes behaviour and learning

Chapter 6 Assessment and intervention at different stages

Chapter 7 Diversity: challenges and rewards

Interesting to have key learning theories explained and applied to the classroom

Useful child development text for teaching assistants on FdA Professional Studies in Education. I especially like the 'why you should read this chapter' sections and the examples which help readers to apply theory to practice.

Often a topic missing in ITT yet one I believe is essential - this is a critical text and meets a need in the gaps in literature.

I really liked this book. It covers a wide range of child development theories which are useful, not just for teachers but for students studying on a number of different education related courses. I particularly liked the case studies which help students to make links between the abstract theory and how it might be seen and used in practice.

As we work with Postgraduate students in education it becomes apparent that they do not always underpin their practice with child development theory, thereby limiting their effectiveness. This book will be valuable to address this.

An incredible resource for trainee teachers, giving clear reasons why each chapter is so important for their future careers. The writing is clear and effective, speaking to both new and experienced teachers to effectively explain the importance and complexities of understanding child development.
